I have struggled with this myself. I live in the country and don't go into the closest town very often. My gaydar does pick up on some people now and then (like while shopping for groceries). It's the 'nod' and then continue on.

I work in a larger town 60 miles away and have many more LGBT friends there.

It's tough, the more out you are the more people will tell you things like, "hey, my daughter's friend is a lesbian with a partner and kids." It is very hard to build a community in small towns.

Any Unity churches in the area? Or if you all aren't of a spiritual bent, try volunteering at the women's shelter or something like that. Then you're not only giving back to the community, but you are also putting yourself into a position to meet like minded folks. Or try taking a class or two at the local community college.
