Every once in a while, the sound will turn on. So I know there's sound capability. But most of the time, I can't even pull up the sound cause when I go to the control panel, it says that I don't have a sound device plugged in, but I'm on a laptop and the speakers are built into the front. I tried plugging speakers in and that didn't work either. What should I do? This is very frustrating.

I would re-install the drivers for your sound card.

I am assuming that you are using Windows XP...so you need to first chk whether sound is turned on (esp. the time when you don't hear it)...

Click Start --> Run ...type sndvol32.exe..this will open up a dialog-box titled Master Out, there chk if Mute All option has been turned on...if so uncheck it and try testing the sound again.

If the above step doesn't yield any result, run devmgmt.msc (Device Management console) from the Run box (same as the preceding step)...this will open up a dialog box titled Device Manager for you...in that look at Sounds, Video and game controllers option...under that right-click the various sub-options and choose properties...click on the Troubleshoot button under the General tab of the dialog box, if you see the msg device not working properly ...it will tell you what the problem might be...whether you need to update the drivers (for that go to the computer or speaker manufacturer's web-site and search for the corresponding drivers) or you might have to reinstall the sound device ...also chk for the sound card in ur machine and see if its correctly plugged-in or if it needs to be replaced.

You can also try Googling your problem...specify Comp. name as well as Operating System u r running... and see what shows up.

Hope this helps and good luck!

R u using XP??? Usually XP gives sound troubles. (Sometimes Other OS also but r seldom).
Take ur Mother Board CD and install the Sound card. Usually XP installs deafult Graphics/Sound cards. Please note that default cards may or may not work all the time depending upon Mother board Compatibility. And that's the reason u must install the sound card that suits ur mother board best. Usually Graphica card number and sound card number r printed on the Mother board's Cover. Ex: P4M266 VIA823X. (P4m266 is my GC num while VIA823X is My Sound Card num). Similarly ur MB' cover will have some alphanumeric numbers printed. Browse these num under MB cd under Sound folder and Install the card depending upon ur OS.

Sounds like a driver problem. Reinstall the necessary drivers, preferably from your system software discs that came with your computer. Downloads should also be available on the Internet from your sound cards manufacturer.

sounds like you're having a hardware issue. it's pretty easy to fix on a pc, not so much on a laptop.

first off, did you buy your laptop new or was it preowned ?

what OS are you running (win98, win2000, winXP ??)

do you use your laptop "on the go" a lot, or is it primarily used in one spot ?

what brand and model of laptop is it ?

answers to these kind of questions help us techies narrow down the likely suspects when trying to isolate a problem. without that kind of data, we're shooting in the dark.
