I previously asked which skills a web designer should have. Now I would like to know what kind of professional I should request from my company's human resources area. This is, what degree should this designer have?

Computer programming, Computer science, Graphic Design, Multimedia Design.

Most systems programmers hold a 4-year degree in computer science.

I disagree with the suggestion that a computer science degree is necessary for web design. Computer Science coursework (generally) concentrates on things like algorithms, data structures, and the like. Generally, specific applications aren't taught; as a result, someone with a computer science degree may well have skills that a web designer doesn't need, and may not have skills which they do; moreover, web design is a graphic design task-- being a whiz at algorithms says nothing about your ability to create a good website.

There are some kinds of websites where programming skills are needed-- complex PHP in ecommerce sites, for instance. But lots of sites just look pretty, and give out standard information . .. the designers for these sites need to have a good sense of aesthetics, and expertise in one or another of the web design applications.

The most important criteria for a web designer, if you're evaluating candidates, is that [s]he has completed a project similar to the one you're contemplating. . . that is WAY more important than what degrees they have.

do you want a designer or programmer, they are usually two seperate people. I am a web programmer and don't have a degree yet. However, I have been working in the field for 6+ years now and have lots of experience. Experience is often far more important than degrees, especially in real world applications.

Well, ideally someone with a degree in computer science, however, don't overlook the experience. A lot of web programmers have gained tremendous education on the job.

If someone has done serious web development for 5+ years and someone just has a four year college degree, I would go with the experience. But, it really depends on what type of web programmer you're looking for.
