For the salesmen and women out there…who was the best salesperson you ever saw and what do you think made them so good? What did they sell? What was their approach?

Great answers so far. The best I have seen is the assumption approach, where this sales person completey spoke the whole time as though the sale was already done, and the whole conversation with the customer was just formality. Very effective.

Why do i suspect that king_of_hyrule has purchased things he really really regrets. lol.

reply to king_of_hyrule:

...becuase your answer seemingly drips with arrogance of never having been "swayed" which, being that it was a statement response as oppose to answering the question, is typically a physiological indication of just the opposite...that you assert one extreme to cover for feelings about the other. Simple pshychology...nothing personal. You are not being judged.

I watched first hand a salesmen pull off the "mirror" approach (see "The Closers" by Jim Pickens & Ben Gay III - yes, that is his name). I was in a jewlery store and the salesman used the mirror approach (basically, copying the mannerisms and style of the customer in order to befriend them and disarm their hesitations on buying). He used it affectively twice while I was there looking at watches. 2 different customers, 2 distinctively different styles, 2 BIG sales.

Check out the book too, I have always been skeptical about sales books but that one is pretty good. It is a good reference book about customers if nothing else.

The best ones ask the right questions to see what the customer really needs and they don't try to sell them something they don't need. They talk to the customer the way they would want to be talked to if the roles were reversed and they are there for the customer after the sale. A sales person with this approach will get many more referrals than the "pushy" salesman and when it comes time to buy again they will come back to you even if your product isn't the lowest price.

I bought a car without seeing it first from a used car salesman. I went in as a young (21) single mom and was trying to buy a sportscar, like a camaro or something. He let me drive it, but then suggested that I may not want that car and proceeded to point out all of the issues and safety concerns, etc...of driving my baby around in that car. And while it looked cool, it may not be the most practical choice. He also offered me more for my trade than it was worth (without adding it back onto the loan) because he knew that I needed a dependable car for my child. He called me a few days later and said he had gotten a really great car in trade from a lady who was middle-aged and having a mid-life crisis and she bought a sportscar. I signed the paperwork he sent to the bank and then went to see my car for the first time. It was the best car I ever owned. I refer people down to him ALL the time!!

Charisma is the best approach to a consumer. Appease their likes and dislikes, make good conversation and you will find they will trust the salesperson more and the salesperson will be able to make a sale easier.
Again . . . charisma is the key, not kiss ***ing or anything else of the like, just a good character. Hard to find these days.

I've never been swayed by any form of marketing or salesmanship. I look at the pure left-brained facts before I buy anything.

*EDIT* (RESPONSE TO ASKERS EDT)
Why would I regret what I bought if I am buying the item without being sheep-minded and swayed by fancy talk or adverts? Your logic is illogical.
