Because realizing the truth might pierce the little "bubble" of self-delusion they so desperately need to get them through their day. In other words, they don't mind actually "being" a bunch of dumbasses. They just don't want to talk about it.

Why do you presume that people who don't think the U.S. was responsible for 9/11 are necessarily brain-washed? Chances are, conspiracy theorists are much more prone to brain-washing than others. The great weight of the evidence is against a conspiracy theory in this instance. The conspiracy theories break down under any critical analysis and that's why most people don't believe them; they defy common sense too--generally a bad trait for a theory. Americans don't "deny their right to question and disprove governmental lies." Rather, Americans generally have good common sense and the conspiracy theories generally don't make sense. That's why most Americans don't swallow the conspiracy theories hook, line, and sinker (though a few do--sometimes because they are blinded by their hatred for the administration).
Just because someone reaches a different conclusion than you have does not mean that person is not thinking independently. Apparently, some people have a hard time appreciating that. Perhaps you are not as superior as you thought, though. It's possible. :-)

After answering your question earlier today and asking you to support your position I looked at your other questions. Of the all the questions you asked, which all just happen to be on this conspiracy theory, the only documentation you have provided is a single website to support your position. That paper led me to do some more research, albiet quick and dirty given that I am currently sitting in an office during working hours.
I am not a scientist nor do I claim to be an expert on this. The people questioning this are obviously very intelligent and well educated. The fact is that scientists can do all the hypothesizing in the world and when things actually happen in real life, they don't always work out the way that the scientists expected them to.
That is one paper by one professor who was not there and did absolutely no physical research into his theory. All of his conclusions are based on watching videos and theories. Many of his conclusions seem rather short sighted to me. For example, when determining what caused the temperatures to reach the high levels that they did he came to no other conclusion than an explosive. Is there nothing else that may have been in those buildings for legitimate reasons that may have caused the high heat levels? I personally do not know the answer to that question but not eliminating those other possibilities hurts his credibility in my eyes. This is only one example.
I have a very easy time thinking for myself. I will again challenge you to supply facts supporting your beliefs on a conspiracy surrounding 9/11. I will certainly take the time to read Steven Jones' paper in more depth but I would appreciate anything else you have discovered. If in fact you do provide enough information to sway my thinking or even enough to prompt me to do more research on my own, I would be happy to join you on your crusade to publicize your theory.

Personally I feel I have no control in the running of the government, but if faced with GW Bush I would give him an ear full and probably end up swimming with the fishies.
They lie and we know it, there's nothing we can do about it without sticking out heads in the guillotine and no one is willing to do that alone.

Peter, and I mean that in the slang term. I saw two planes fly into two buildings, I saw some towel head admit to it., what I did not see is the two buildings standing there the next day. Everything is not a conspiracy Charlie Sheen, especially when the moron admitted to it. Get a life stupid.

true,,, many follow the party leader,,, it's the same in the schoolyard, or the neighborhood,,,, not a good idea,, unless you want to be identified with someone else, and not yourself,,, know who you are,, stand up for what you believe, and beside those you wish to,, don't follow blindly,,,
