These sites all seem very cool but other than the novelty, they don’t seem to have much purpose, and not being able to use the "back" button is crummy. Am I missing something?

I don't like them either, many of them don't work right on all browsers, and you have to have the most updated versions to see all the fancy stuff.
Sites should have a flash and non-flash version for those of us not interested in their "cool" graphics

Flash is preferred by many sophisticated developers. Some big advantages:

1) better automatic reformatting across different platforms, screen sizes
2) better content protection (eg harder to download graphics)
3) harder to hack
4) harder for customer to modify (so keeps web developer earning)
5) Vector graphics are very "light" (low bandwidth)
6) avoids weird browser peculiarities (eg CSS anomalies)

Yeah, Flash is a poor program to design websites in. HTML has stood the test of time, and still works better than any other format.

flash allows for a great deal of interactivity and sound/graphics/video using much lower bandwidth than other technologies
