If you have a place in your yard that you want to fince in that is 10ft.x10ft. It will take 40ft. of fincing and the area will be 100sq.ft. However if you have a place 15ft.x5ft. it will still take 40ft. to fince but now you have an area of only 75sq.ft.

How can you lose 15sq.ft. if you're still using the same amount of fince?

Or you could do 19ft x 1ft and have 19sq. ft. but still 40ft of fence.

It's because the perimeter is not tied to the area. The maximum area is when you have a square. But imagine a long skinny rectangle and you can see why the area isn't constant.

In the worst case, imagine two 20 ft. fences back to back. The perimeter is still 40ft, but the area is zero!

Another way to see this is to imagine increasing each fence by a foot. You have added 4 linear feet to your fence (11ft x 4 = 44 ft) but you have added 21 feet to your area (11ft x 11ft). Add another foot and the perimeter is 48 (12ft x 4 = 48ft), but the area is now 23 feet more (12ft x 12ft). Perimeter increases linearly, (4ft, 4ft, 4ft) but the area increases geometrically (related to the square of the side).

uhhh no....

if you have a 15x15 square each side is 15 feet. 15 times 4 is 60. It will take 60 feet of fence. And that is 225 square feet.

If you dont say 15x15 and just say 40 ft of fence to wrap 75 sq feet you could change the diemnsions. But in your example the dimensions are set. 15 feet by 15 feet.

OOOOO 15 x 5..... yeah what everyone else below me said...

two 15 ft sides 2 5 foot sides... 15x2 + 5x2 = 40ft of fence

15x5 = 75

some shapes have more surface area than others.. think of a 10 x 1 rectangle.. area 10 u squared, then 5 x 2 area 10 u sqaured. the 10 x1 has a larger perimiter, just like ur 15 x 5.

Different shapes have a different ratio of area : perimeter

Think about this:

You have two square tables put together to make 1 rectangular table. If you take the tables apart, there is still the same amount of table space, but you can suddenly fit more seats around the edges.
