Should a spouse have to ask to spend money or write a check out of the check book?

question is vague.
but actually it should be discussed in the beginning of setting up your joint account how it should be handled.
Accurate bookkeeping is vital!!! and any large purchases should be discussed before being made...but to write a check to pay a bill or to spend some $$$ grocery shopping is usually norm. the only one that should ask is the one that doesn't know the balance or whether all the bills have been accounted for.

Money is one of the things that can break a marriage. Whatever is right of wrong for another couple may not be so for you -- you must talk, understand each othher, and hopefully agree - on money matters (spending, saving, etc.) before you marry. Otherwise your marriage is at risk.

As long as the important bills are covered and there is open communication in the finances, I don't think either should have to ask about spending money.

Just be sure to log what you've spent so as to avoid bouncing checks.

not necessarily ask, but you need to let your other half know if you write a check to be sure the ledger is balanced... u don't want to be surprised with a bounced check... major purchases (which exceed X amount) should be discussed and agreed upon first...

No, as long as the spending will not make important checks bounce like rent/mortgage, utilities, etc.

No, they should not. But major purchases should require an agreement by both spouses.
Also depends on the family's economic factors.

Um NO. It's your money too. Even if you're a housewife....you do all his crap. You cook and clean after him. Don't let a stupid man tell you you have to ask permission for anything.

no...not at all...but I think you should not have to ask but you should inform him/her on how much you spent...cause that money might be there to pay for something else......
