I have lots of programs running in the background, around 40 by looking at the list, i'm sure there leeching my computers resources but not too sure if i need them all, probably don't.

So can you please advise? tips? tricks? good programs to manage this list? or means to get rid of them? some just keep on coming back! like win update! i hate this! and all the rest.

So any suggestion how i can get this down to the absolute minimum?

go to download.com and you can get a simple utility which will not only allow you to stop any running programs but also let you know which program started it and if it is necessary and then you can decide if you want to terminate that program
one example is process library

i have had a look at the screen grab and everything looks fine in the processes, while we are in the task manager check your cpu usage,it should normally fluctuate between 0-4% anything that is over 20% for long periods needs investigation
type msconfig in run and uncheck any programs you dont want to run at start up,however this will only increase your boot-up speed
rootkits are infections that bury themselves deep inside your hard drive and are very hard to detect,i use f-secure anti-virus 2006 and this has a rootkit scanner built in,try a 6 month trial at http://www.f-secure.com/protectyourpc/,it also has anti-spyware built in aswell
however if you just want a stand alone rootkit scanner try this link http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/rootkit/,this will dig out any nastys that may be slowing down your p.c
as allways a good old virus and spyware scan will rule out any infection
good luck

If you download spybot search and destroy 1.3, it has a feature to view & disable certain start up items that will start up in the background of your computer. A good program for showing all the currently running processes & services on your computer is Security Task Manager.

Goto start menu, click run then type 'msconfig' and press enter.

Goto the startup tab (last one). Uncheck the programs you don't want to start. Press OK then reboot the computer. The programs you unchecked will not startup now.

task manager my good friend it is there for just such reasons. killing naughty apps - look at your start files and see what you do and don't running when you boot up - be very about changing this sort of stuff though you really have to think and research what you altering. otherwise it might involve a reinstall!
