ok first off jyd9999, changing your exhaust from stock is NOT ILLEGAL!!! what are you like 7? or really unexperienced in the car field? Yes you do need a catalytic converter, or it will be illegal, but just do it like everyone down here in the south does, gut it! (the catalytic converter I mean) It makes for a smoother ride, it might be illegal, but its smooth and sounds better (LOUDER!!!) And, if if you ever get caught tell them something must have jumped up and punctured it ;) but yes your going to need 2 catalytic converter's, one for each side, I have dual exhaust on my truck with flowmasters wow!!! it sounds good, when im double clutching down the road!!! I got a 1993 Ford Ranger!

If you live in an area that inspects your truck for emissions then you would have to leave the convertor on and use one for each side for better flow. There are smaller ones than that huge one that came on Chevy's of your year and cost maybe $100 each. IF you don't live in a place that inspects your exhaust then just get the dual exhaust without the convertors.

Changing your exhaust is perfectly legal. If you want dual exhaust then yes, you need two catalytic converters to meet EPA and DEQ regs for clean air.

I would also recommend going with a larger diameter pipe to allow your engine to breathe easier. Better performance that way.

In the United States, you can't run without catalytic converters, and the penalty varies depending on your state. As a datapoint, in California, running without cats is a $2000 ticket.

Make it into duals after the converter.

if your area calls for emissions testing you have to have all components in working order so check local law and use that as a guide my recommendation is to go with the 2-cat system just to cover all bases
