Most species of life on Earth are very small.
Protozoa, bacteria, viruses, algae, insects.
So many types, so little food and room needed for them, so many niches and eco systems and larger creatures to live within.
Large creatures (more than a pound) are facing the worst extinction period in 65 million years.

In order to come up with something good, you gotta try many recipes. Also don't forget, that only about 1% of all species are in existence at this time. 99% are gone and only preserved (if that) as fossils.
