Well first off, it depends if you are using Wireless internet or not. If you are, chances are it will try to detect wireless internet locations known as "hot spots". These hot spots like you said, were in libraries, or cafe's, or hotels and some restaurants. By the sounds of it, your laptop already is setup to automatically find internet on its own, if you are trying to connect at home, you need to connect it with a network cable which is connected to a highspeed modem (or router). A router is a peice of hardware that splits up connections with the modem connected to it so that multiple computers can connect simultaneously.

Or If your at home, you need a wireless router, with your highspeed connected to the router. Otherwise you need to be directly connected with a network cable. The port for that, looks like a phone cable port (hole).

you have a wireless enabled laptop. this means you msut have a wireless router at home, OR your lapper must have a modem or other internet connection device (hardware) and be connected via cable to the isp outlet.(phone or dsl). if you've got the isp for home & the connections up, the turn OFF the wireless in your lapper.

because there is wireless internet there and not at your home. what you need is like high speed online, and then you need a wireless router. then you can get online at home. :) or, if you don't want to pay for a wireless router, you can usually hook it up to a USB thing.
