I'd actually like to know this, and everything else. I'm obsessed with Japan and Japanese culture, I'd like to know the hottest new toys and games, how the atmosphere is there, how do people dress, anything and everything you can tell me.

Thanks so much!!

"Gedo Senki", the new Hayao Miyazaki movie, is really popular. Well, it's a given that anime and manga are popular, but there are still some more popular than others. I don't think I went into one store (besides restaurants) that didn't have Hello Kitty merchandise of some kind.

The atmosphere is very inviting. You'll know when you go there. I don't know how some people got the impression that they don't like Americans. Everyone is so friendly, and besides the smoke from everyone smoking, the actual atmosphere is clean. Well, maybe not, but that's not a big deal.

The major thing I got out of my recent trip there is that everything feels right there. I don't know how to explain it. Everything feels like the way I want to live. Great public transportation, by the way. But back to the other parts of the question.

You're going to see students in uniforms, but otherwise, most people dress the same as you would see in America. One other thing I noticed is that a lot of older guys (college-aged) have their hair dyed blonde. Not sure why, but it must be a trend.

Wow, and now I notice that I could tell you anything and everything. Well, what else... CDs and video games are a tad expensive, but it's not too unmanageable. You may just have to settle with used stuff, but they have plenty of used CD, and book stores as well as new.

The buildings in Japan...well they are more vertically inclined than horizontal. A mall of the same size in America, being two floors, would be nine floors in Japan. There might only be four stores on one floor, but just keep going up. That is pretty cool to me, and retailers love it because you get to go by every store on your way up.

Expect to shop a lot, but it's mainly girls' stores. Of course, it's the guys paying for all the stuff, so watch out if you make a Japanese girlfriend! By the way, it is uncommon to see actual dating going on between people under the age of 18, but once they hit college, it's dating paradise, it seems. You won't see teenagers going out to malls together and holding hands. It's always college-aged students.

Well, what else? I guess I am leading up to encouraging you to visit, but I'm sure you will if you are obsessed. Don't let anyone tell you that that is a bad thing. Once you pursue your dreams, you won't regret anything. And I paid a pretty penny (high price) to get to Japan for only 13 days, but it was worth it. This place leaves you coming back for more, and believe me; I didn't want to leave (partially because of the 12 hour plane flight). Save up for a few years, and then go. Believe me, it's worth it.

And lastly...what else is hot right now? Well, DS and Game Boy have always been popular. And recently, New Super Mario Bros. is really big. But that may have been just that week I was there. If you like CDs, I can't reiterate the amount of CDs you can find in used stores. You really won't believe how much stuff there is. I must have spent an hour in one looking at a bunch of CDs I knew I wouldn't buy.

Oh, and their variety shows are so funny. They call it variety, but we like to think of it as game shows. No money involved, but always some crazy little things. It's always good to watch. This brings me to remembering a few things you may have to give up while over there. I never drank milk, but I didn't really feel I was missing it. You'll also be giving up big houses. Believe me; you'd have to be a millionaire just to have what we might consider a decent-sized house. Hotels are still about the same price, but it's not surprising when you consider that hotels are still building upwards and don't lose any money, really.

Oh, here's something you'll like. Cell phones. Literally, everyone has a cell phone. And the friend I stayed with for four days on my trip said that they are very cheap plans, which is why everyone has one. You know what that means? They can spend more money on a sweet phone. And man do they have sweet phones. And if you're wondering why the plans are cheap, it's because their country is not even the size of California. That's all the area the companies have to serve their customers, unlike here where we expect calls all around the country, some place being thousands of miles apart. Not very often in Japan, as you can imagine.

There's a heck of a lot of stuff I am leaving out. Thanks for posting this question, and sorry if I overwhelmed you with info. I guessed you figured out I am obsessed with Japan, too. Bottom line, go there. My suggestion is to go with someone the first time, and/or study the language. You'll have many stories to share, and you won't regret it.
