while working on my family tree i came across social security#s for my grandparents and step father all three are deceased,with all the id thefts ect. going on why would anyone put out such info. for anyone to see isnt there risk of someone still using their #s?

if they died recently and they have a spouse who is collecting death benefits from soclal security, then if you or someone else tried to use it, a flag would come up saying that they number given had a death benefit claim attached to it. I work in a job where we run credit and i had someone use thier deceased father's ssn, and tht's excatly what happend to me.

The numbers are reissued after a person dies. Now you have someone else's SSN so use it wisely.

i believe once someone dies after a certain amount of time the ssn goes back into circulation for use of someone else...there are only so many # combos...the #s have to be reused.

after someone dies the social security administration releases this information after death it is no longer confidential and can be used for family research
