Paul Bremer pretty much supplied the footsoldiers for the insurgency when he broke a promise to the Iraqi military by terminating their employment, along with most Baathist party members. Many went next door and joined the insurgency.

The situation has gotten steadily worse. Iraq has become a festering cesspool of sectarian violence and foreign terrorist activity. The incompetence of Donald Rumsfeld and the Bush Administration in managing the occupation is by now legendary.

Yes. There have been almost no attacks against Coalition troops or against Iraqi government forces recently. Most of the recent attacks have been against innocent Iraqi civilians. These are terrorists, not insurgents.

Far from it. Hearing from someone that has been fighting there since the beginning, he says everytime you kill an insurgent more of their famly join in vengeance. It is a catch 22. If anything it grows. One problem that one soldier in command over ther said. It is like gangs in a neighborhood causing violence. The police come and arrest a few and leave. The gangs come back. Same thing there. We enter an area and they leave, we leave they come back.

Wasn't that a couple of years ago? With all the progress that has been made, I'm pretty sure that these days generals are mostly reporting just occasional daily heavily armed horsing around, nothing serious.
