an automatic must use power from the engine to shift gears.
also, most stick shifts have a fifth, overdrive gear, whereas not all automatics have an overdrive.
it all depends on how you drive though. if you have a lead foot, then both types of cars will get crummy gas mileage.

Driven properly, a manual will generally get slightly better mileage than an automatic. There are a few exceptions though. Modern automatics are FAR more efficient that their predecessors of even a few years ago.

If it is driven correctly, it should use LESS gas. If you speed around, trying to get "2nd Gear Chirps" you will use MORE gas. If gas is the issue, then drive it mellow, and you'll save quite a bit.

it isnt MUCH of a difference in auto and manual...auto is controlled by the computer..manual is controlled by you...
