in their suits! i hear they have special hi-tech diapers while out walking on moons. inside the shuttle it's another story:

"...Let's suppose you propose to cleanse yourself fore and aft, so to speak. First you seat yourself firmly on the commode. (Bear in mind that you wear civvies aboard the space shuttle, not a space suit.)

Various ingenious restraining devices are provided so you don't drift off at an untoward moment. In front of you is a urinal--essentially a funnel with a hose. It can be moved around if you later want to do your business standing up. The commode seat is cushioned so as to make a good seal with your bottom, thereby ensuring good suction and preventing the escape of undesirable substances.

Then you turn on a fan inside the commode and do your business. The fan pulls the nasties into a sort of mesh bag that traps solids but allows liquids to pass through. The water is pumped to a storage tank, which is later emptied into space. When you're done, you seal up the top of the commode and open the bowl to the vacuum of space. The moisture in the solids boils away instantly, considerably reducing their bulk. (NASA folks cheerfully refer to this process as "freeze-drying.") A special device compacts what's left and it's stored in the commode until you get back down to the ground."

There's this 'special' toilet where the astronauts go. IT has some devices that help the astronauts stay on the seat, and a vacuum to suck up all the gross 'stuff'. I don't know what the astronauts do with the poo, but the dump the pee into outer space. The astronauts think that the frozen pee looks beautiful floating by in little chunks, but I think it's just disgusting.

Like anyone on a trip, they pull off at the next rest area and use the facilities.

Actually, it is a vacuum assisted space toilet mechanism. At least modern astronauts have those. Depending upon which suit they're in, astronauts have to wear diapers, and that's all the mercury era astronauts had--after Shepard.

The space shuttle has the world's most advanced pottie... and I'll bet that toilet seat cost a cool $50k.

they only positioned on diapers for the launch. while they're in area, there's a gadget that aspects somewhat suction that they use while they could. on account that at launch, they're strapped in and gravity is somewhat too extreme for the suction to conquer, they could positioned on diapers. they do no longer call them that however.
