Honestly, I really think it is. Up there with alcoholc, drugs, gambling... Seriously. I cannot NOT shop. And I'm not just talking about for myself. I buy baby clothes for my friends babies ALL the time, I buy gifts for people visiting ALL the time. I buy decorating things for my house, clothes, and more baby stuff. it's out of control.
Anyone else agree with me or am I just being dumb?

I believe that anything can become an addiction. If you are continually being involved in doing something, then it becomes a habit/addiction. So to answer your question, yes you can be addicted to shopping. Hey, it could be a lot worse; I'm addicted to chapstick, food, and the computer. I have some messed up addictions (especially the chapstick one.)

-God bless

You are not dumb. In fact, the opposite: you are very self aware and realize you have a problem. It is definitely an addiction. All of the behaviors you mentioned, plus shopping, are addictive behaviors. You get a sense of euphoria or a "high" when you buy something. It makes you feel empowered or like you've conquered something. The usual reason an addict shops is to replace something they're missing in their life: love, food, booze, friendship, etc. I'm not sure but I believe there is some sort of 12 step group for addicted shoppers, much like AA or NA. I'm sure they or a counselor could help. Good luck and let me know how you're doing.

OMG I SO AGREE!!! And I feel for you, I'm in the same boat!! I once blew like $5000 in a month or so - and I can't even tell you what the hell I bought with it. I have the same problem, I just love shopping WAY too much. I wish people would realize that this IS a serious problem and not just something you can "get over" - and because it's not officially recognized as an adiction or substance abuse, there's no "patch" no real support or anything.

THIS IS VERY REAL!!!!

Shopping is an addiction if you have to go all the time. But the only way you can even do that is if you have money.Don't worry about people you don't need to get them anything unless its a party or something. Don't waste your money when they can get it themselves. And u r being dumb cuz u don't need a whole bunch cuz then you might not even end up using any of it! Thats all i have too say to you.

It is in fact an addiction. It's called Compulsive Shopping and Spending. People who have this problem also frequently buy for others rather than themselves. They do this to justify their spending. They feel that they are being kind/generous for buying for others. But this still means the person is still addicted.

This is just one of the many sites that may help you.

I have that exact same problem. Maybe we should start a weekly online meeting and discuss this very important issue. I buy clothes/shoes for my daughter that she will not even be able to wear for at least 2 more years. I have about 30 items in my closet that have the price tag still on them. I have over 20 half empty bottles of shampoo and conditioner in my bathroom and I only use one of them. I have 11 sets of sheets for my bed (but use the same 3 sets over and over). If it's on sale I buy it even if I don't need it.

I really feel your pain

Compulsive shopping is defined as inappropriate, excessive and out of control ; you might have a problem. One site that addresses this is at :

I personally do not consider it an addiction. I consider it Obsessive Compulsive behaviour, and I think it would be fun for you to see a counselor instead of go shopping for a few weeks. It is amazing the bargains you can get in a therapist's office ! LOL !
Good Luck !

Not necessarily an addiction rather than an impulse. I feel people use shopping as a tool for happiness when they are sad, down, or depressed. It always makes you happy and forget the bad when you introduce something new that you can enjoy.

Shopping itself is not an addiction. You simply have an addiction to shopping. There can be many sources for your manic behavior. If it's creating problems, such as financial, I suggest you seek a medical opinion. Often, manic behaviors can be easily treated & conquered.
