the mayan culture actually didnt die, the race did. many people believe that the spaniard colonialism in mexico are accountbale for that. but that was just a mere misconception.

the mayan culture was swept because of the long drought and rainy season that brought about acute illnesses. remember the Black death in europe during the 13th century? where people just died on the streets from acute fever, seizures, swelling of glands and all that stuffs? well that, most likely, had happened to the mayans. the disease was merely brought by rodents, and flies and all.

people thought the disease was a curse and badluck brought by the spaniards. but actually, the omen was already there even before the colonialism. mainly, the spaniards survived from the plague primarily becoz of sanitary reasons. of course, the spaniards autocracy made their status far above the native mexicans. so they are served and their health are well-taken care of.

the long drought had accumulated viral, bacterial and fungal whatever on the environment. and when the wet season came, they all spread out killing the mayan race.

Because the Spanish conquistadors murdered them all. I believe the Mayans, along with the Inca and Aztecs, still existed when Colombus first landed on Corpus Christi.

One theory is environmental destruction caused by over population and over farming created a food shortage.

Another theory is a temporary shift in world climate caused a decade long (or longer) drought that resulted in a food shortage.

Either one would have sparked civil war as people fought over the little food that was left.

Another theory is a peasant revolt against an opressive upper class.

The leading theory is drought and war. Drought in major areas of Mayan habitation left them vulnerable to attack from others.

There is archaeological evidence of warfare, famine, and revolt against the elite at various central lowlands sites.

It didn't. There are millions of Maya living right now in Guatamala and Mexico. They left their cities because of drought and warfare. But they didn't cease to exist.
