The reason I ask is because i have a 9 year old daughter and I've begun noticing that she's having mood swings. If things go her way she's a great person to be around but if they don't she has a attitude. I started noticing when i tell her to do things or ask her to do things I hear the huffs and puffs. (she does the same with her dad). You can't say anything critical to her because she takes everything so personal. She's interested in boys now and talks on the phone with her friends. i even notice her gossiping. Now if she was 13 or 14 i would know that this is regular behavior for a teenager, but I can't remember being this way at 9. I was telling a co-worker of mine that Im finding it harder to have something nice to say to my 9 year old but its like my 2 year old is GREAT. and she's a terror (terrible two). I need some help on understanding if there is a pre puberty stage that kids go through or what?

There's no set time for puberty to start it varies from child to chld. It does sound like her hormones are starting to kick in so just try and take that into consideration when her 'attitude' gets the better of her it's not easy I have a 12 year old and she's still adjusting to the whole hormonal mood swings thing two years after puberty started.

There is no "exactly" about puberty. Some girls start their periods as young as 9. But, if her mood is the only thing going on here (and you're not seeing any physical changes) then it's probably a discipline issue more than a hormonal mood swing issue. Either way, she needs to know that giving her parents attitude isn't OK (even if it IS normal.)

Those aren't mood swings..she's just being a brat about it. Puberty has nothing to do huffs and puffs when being asked to do something, it's physical changes. The reason teens act like that is because at that age they think they know everything...at 9 years old, your daughter is just being snotty.

I was never like that when i was 9.

at nine, I was... playing video games, collecting pokemon cards, and playing soccer outside with my friends.
ok so i was a bit of a tomboy.. but whatever lol.

now i am 13, and i am about the same, except for the playing soccer with friends, because NOW i dont have any friends.

i dont ever have mood swings., i dont gossip. i HATE talking on the phone because i never have anything to say.

so stop putting "teenagers" in this 'bubble' (so to speak) of moodiness, rudeness, gossipping etc.

Yes, she could be going through puberty now. Has she had her period yet? My daughter is 12 and she acts the same way, but she hasn't started her period yet. It is the pre-puberty attitude. My sister's 16 year old, who has her period, acts that way also. I believe that it is the female thing. You know! Bad attitudes, you need to punish her to let her know that that isn't acceptible to be snotty. Ground her to her room for a day. Or whichever you like.

it depends. nowadays it's about twelve, thirteen, but i think they first start getting like that when they're about ten. but now they add all kinds of hormones to meat and stuff like that, and now girls are going trough puberty when they're like eight.
But she's probably jus trying to act grown-up, and trying to give you a hard time because she thinks it's the cool thing to do. if you think that's what it is, point out to her that she is not a teenager and you know she is trying to act older and she will stop.
