It depends on what kind of ant, and where their nest is. Ants like moisture ants or carpenter ants, that make their home in moist wood (potentially causing structural damage) require different tactics than regular field ants that are wandering into your home from an outside source, and completely different tactics from critters like pharaoh ants which can actually split into multiple colonies and become a much worse problem if you use the wrong type of insecticide.
So the first step is to positively identify the kind of ants you have.

I tolerated mucho ants in my kitchen, one bedroom, and bathroom for 2 years. Then, I called in the exterminator. I have been ant free for 2 months now.

any organophosphorated powder insectice will do. just sprinkle in their tracks and around their nest and done. Cover your mouth and nose, wear gloves. they'll be all dead within 2 days.
keep children and pets away from the powder.
