why when i open a document thar was hidden on my PC, a pop up appears that tells me to chose an encoding that?

A pop up appears thet tells me to chose an encoding that will make my document readable. so i chose any encoding but the document appeared funn..what is that about and how do i chose an encodining that only i know about to make my document accesibl by only me?

if it was hidden? then id be very carefull about opening it.sounds like a trojen virus.
