You can detect plagerism by typing in a particularly well said sentence into a search engine like google or yahoo. It will be able to detect the sentence if it has been published on the web. To prevent plagerism, tell your students that you have nothing better to do than to type their papers into your computer because you have no plans for the weekend lol

if you want to prevent getting CAUGHT plagerizing then you should probably just paraphrase ideas. Just try to understand what they're saying and put it in your own words.

Sometimes when I've questioned if writings were plagerized, I just copy and pasted a line or two of the text into google. So many things are online these days, you sometimes can easily determine the source.

You can minimize it by standing behind the students and wearing non squeking shoes. Eliminating it completely is impossible. Tell them, that they can cheat but if the get caught,......

FYI: This is the correct spelling of plagiarism...There are laws preventing it and there are websites that can catch it.

When otherwise mediocre students turn in great work, we suspect plagiarism. Also, sudden tense changes, changes in style, etc.
