I'm educated and I act educated. I don't care if a person is educated, but my immediate family can act like downright hicks. They love me and look up to me, but sometimes I'm embarrassed by them. Sometimes I'm glad that I live 2,000 miles away. Other times, I miss them. Is thinking like this normal or average?

Strangely most people at one stage of their live think their family embarrass them , some times they have the right to .But just remember they are still the only family you"ve got, so just love them for how they are.

No, it's not. I know very few people who aren't at least a little embarrassed by at least one member of their family. I know there is plenty in my family to be embarrassed about, and most of the time I wish I had a different family, except for my grandparents, who are normal.

I know what it is like to be embarrassed by my parents, and they have embarrassed me a time or two. But it doesn't matter because I love them anyway, especially now that I live in a different country than they do and don't have the opportunity to see them very often.

Get off your high-horse and enjoy your family while you can. Humans live and then they die, how will you feel when your family is gone? You will likely feel that you should have respected them and loved them more. Your intelligence is very limited as far as I'm concerned because you don't realize that life is so short, mere intelligence is only temporary. One day, you will regret having ever been embarassed by your family and wish you had loved them more while you still could have.

Yes this is a normal situation under many circumstances and it happens to many many people.

Parents behave in this manner due to over-protection of their children, even though the children have already left home and maybe, like yourself, live far away from them.

When children are still at home, parents extend their over-protection by posing rules and regulations thinking they may oppose to their children's ways of life-style which of course may be different from the one they have passed through. When then the children leave home, parents re-build their protection strategies in different ways which cover every issue their children try to discuss or share with them as soon as they meet, or call each other.

What ever the case may be, I strongly believe that they remain your parents. I SUGGEST something really wise - LISTEN FROM EAR AND DROP IT OUT FROM THE OTHER as soon your leave your home.

From experience I may tell you that you will miss your parents tremendously when they pass away.

You know I used to feel that way with one of my ex's when I went
home. But you know what when it comes down to it they love you
more than anyone walking this planet and I know my heart is at home where my family is and I would do anything to be where I was at 21. My advice is counseling even though you are educated
there is something lacking in that area.

LOL...can't pick family my friend. It's tough and I've been the same route once and a while with a relative or two of my own.
But...you do live 2000 miles away so I guess for the amount of time you have to deal with it it's livable.

Good god, you are not wrong, I get embarrassed by my family all the time. My parents are small town people, farm stock, and it shows, but you know what? I wouldn't have them any other way, they know what and who theya re, and we can all have a good laugh together at some of the stuff they say and do!

Embarrassment was invented by families to punish the uppity.
