Yep, we already have a larger economy than France. My bigger concern however, is that California will break away not from the Union, but the Continent of North America, in some sort of massive earthquake and sink into the ocean. We're due up for a nasty one soon.

I think breaking away is not a good because some texan would be get elected as the President and declare war on Iraq. It would not go well for the United States.

However, Northern California might be able to break away from Southern California. This would free all of us in the North to make our part of the United States live in Lincolns vision of America.

California cannot secede from the Union. This issue was settled over a century ago with the close of the Civil War. Once a state is in it can't leave, and California has been in the Union a long, long time.

As a result of the last 2 elections I think its obvious fighting the Civil War to force the South to remain in the Union was a horrible mistake. For now, a simple Congressional act could dissolve the United States, and I do not think it would be a bad idea. No war needs to be fought, just sign a piece of paper. The Republicans, the conservatives, the fundamentalist christians have no respect for me, and I have none for them. Its like a bad marriage--why go on pretending it works, when it obviously does not. It was a nice idea. It failed. Time to move on.

California is going to break away from the Union. But it won't be able to stand on its own, because it will sink into the ocean.

California cannot break from the union.
If this would ever happen(in everyone's dream and imagination) yes CA can stand on it's own. 5th largest economy in the world...but not just that also there is a lot of diversity and hence a lot more ideas to keep it on it's feet.

It could happen.. but it would take a civil war and that is highly unlikely (right now anyway) Cali is far too important to the american economy, and it would be disastous to the country.. Don't go giving us Californians ideas now...

Sure, it could. Taxes would have to go up even further, though, as it would need its own military services (those submarines are expensive!) and a few other odds-n-ends now provided by the Federal government.

Government would not allow it, just like before the civil war, when the southern states tried that so they could keep slavery. That is what started the war.
