If so, what plants?

No they don't. They're carnivorous. Sometimes they will pick at plants out of curiousity, but they are not eating the them. A betta will only eat plants if he is literally starving.... that's like if you had to resort to eating sticks to stay alive.

However, adding a plant or two to his tank is not a bad idea (as long as it's not one of those horrid peace lilly or bamboo vases). If your betta's tank is at least 2 gallons, one small plant would be good. Too many would overcrowd poor betta, and the plants would not die very fast because there isn't enough nitrate produced by a single betta to help the plants thrive.

I would recommend adding a java fern. They are one of the easiest aquatic plants to care for. They aren't even planted in the gravel. Just provide it with light (like the bulb in your fish tank), keep the temperature warm (between 75-80 degrees, which it should be already for Mr. Betta), and tie it to a stone until the roots grow around it. It's also awesome because you can move it around to the tank as much as you please.

Also, in addition to a handsome addition to a tank, java fern will keep Mr. Betta's water cleaner! (But this doesn't mean to skimp on tank cleanings. Continue to do them as often as you have been).

Hope this info helps!

Do betta fish eat plants?

No. And I can't stand when people say to put bettas in a vase with plants because they'll eat the roots.

They are carnivorous fish. They eat meat. Beefheart, bloodworms, brine shrimp - meat.

My betta, however, does like his weekly pea (I feed all my fish peas once a week to clean them out).

No, not really but they do eat food from plant sources. Commercial pellets do contain these and bettas do eat them.

Our betta pecks at the live plants in the tank, but I'm not sure if he is eating them.

As Kira answered, no they do not. (They will, however, nip at the plant's roots.)

Adding aquatic plants to a Beta's tank will greatly improve the well being of your Beta.

Plants provide a natural hiding place for fish; your Beta's activity will increase greatly if plants are added.
