If you aren't one to wear short shirt that actually show your belly button there is no advantage of having it pierced. I had my belly button pierced. It got infected the very first week and hurt alot because of that. I had to wear my pants unbuttoned for quite some time. I had it pierced for about three years and then decided to take it out. I found no point to have it anymore. It got caught on sweaters all the time. Well, now I have two permanent holes in my belly button - big disadvantage! (It's been out for three years and hasn't closed up completely) My only suggestion is that if you get it pierced go with a simple piece of jewelery, nothing with a jewel in it or anything like that. Just get the regular metal piece for the first few weeks until the piercing heals. I had a jeweled piece and I think that is what caused the infection.

There are absolutely no advantages to having any body piercings. The disadvantages are possiblity of infection, or the ring getting caught on something and tearing body tissue.

Advantages - You can look like everyone else that had it done 3 years ago when it was all the rage. You can take it out if you don't like it.
Disadvantages - You look like everyone else who had it done 3 years ago. It takes a long time to heal and gets infected easily. You will have a scar if you take it out. If you have even 1 ounce of belly fat it looks ridiculous.
Hope this helps you make a decision!

I agree with knittinmama and would like to add pregnancy to the list. My daughter didn't have much of a problem with hers when she had her son, but I also know of a girl whos piercing stretched so much that years after giving birth, she could easily fit her pinky finger through the stretched-out hole! Ewww - not a pretty sight!
