#1 The Lebanese Army

The current Commander in Chief is General Michel Sleiman. The Lebanese Armed Forces Command is located in Yarzeh. The army had an authorized strength of about 70,000 men in 2006. Its order of battle had 11 mechanized infantry brigades, a Presidential Guard Brigade, a commando/Ranger Regiment, five Special Forces regiments, an air assault regiment, and two artillery regiments. In 2000, there were only apprximately 800 active personnel in the Air Force. The air force currently lacks any operational fixed wing aircraft. Active aircraft include ex-US Army helicopters, which are used throughout the country on a variety of missions: 30 Bell UH-1H - approximate , 4 Robinson R44 Raven II , 4 Robinson helicopters, which are used for training purposes. They are based at Rayak Air Base in the eastern part of the country. The abilities of the Lebanese Naval Forces largely reflect their missions which are mostly domestic concerns and their operations mirror that of a coast guard more than a traditional Navy.

The army is the only element of Lebanon's military forces with
any serious potential war fighting capability against a well-organized military force.

#2 Hezbollah Military Forces in Lebanon

- Roughly 2,500-3,500 men, heavily dependent on part-time and
irregular forces. Many are now highly experienced, often well-educated forces.

- Composed of a core of around 300 guerrillas. Has deliberately cut its force over the past years to prevent infiltration and leaks.

In 2003 after Colin Powell visited Lebanon, Lebanon arrested 45 suspected terrorists as the US pressured Lebanon to dismantle Hezbollah. Syria and Lebanon say they oppose terrorism but classify groups such as Hizbullah and Hamas as resistance organizations fighting Israeli occupation of Arab land. .

By custom, the Lebanese president is a Maronite Christian, the prime minister is a Sunni Muslim, and the speaker of the legislature is a Shi'a Muslim. The Lebanese president is Emile Lahoud, the prime minister is Fuad Siniora.

With the departure of Syrian troops in April 2005, the Lebanese government had made it a priority to modernize and upgrade the military and security forces. However, little was accomplished and Hezbollah was able to operate freely.

Hezbollah gained popular support by providing social services such as hospitals and schools for Lebanese Shiites.

Hezbollah is Lebanon's armed forces. They are part of the government.

They really aren't interested in "repelling" Israel forces. Their tactics are to continue their unprovoked shelling of civilain areas and to force innocent people to act as human shields around the rockets. Civilians who try to flee are shot in the back. The idea here is to force the IDF to kill civilians.

This is actually a proxy war by Iran. Iran is testing the response of the international community to see what they will do. There is very strong reason to believe that Iran plans a nuclear attack on Israel on or about August 22. If that happens, there will be all out war in the middle east and Israel will unleash its full power against its enemies without regard to civilians in any manner. Since Israel has a nuclear arsenal capable of killing every living thing in the middle east, this is a problem.

Our best bet for preventing this would be for the US to immediately attack Iran and seize their nuclear facilities.

it has a standing army, but compared to Israel it is a weak force. Hezbollah are far better equipped than the Lebanese army. the problem now for Israel is that they have just increased the number of people willing to join a terrorist group. another problem for Lebanon is that a large part of the army is the same type of Muslim as Hezbollah. that makes it hard for Lebanon to deal with them. to me Israels response is over the top and is destroying a country that is friendly to the west.

yes they have an army and probably barracks too. but they do not have the fire power to confront Israel. an open war with Israel will consume all of lebanon. if they could not handle hezbolla, how could they confront Israel? hez started this war in lebanon, yet the lebanese can not ask them to stop. they are a govt within a govt. its like the bug taking over the dog.

The only one with money is Americ . . sorry I mean Israel. So they can afford better class of weapons whilst other countries have to rely on ways that to us seem awful. But what is worse bombing a school and killing innocent people or a human bomb doing the same thing.
