You are actually asking two different questions. A book's publication may not have anything to do with it's success.

The "cheapest" way to get a book published would be for someone else to publish it for you. In other words, convince a publisher to buy the printing rights to your work. That is VERY hard to do, since there are literally hundreds of thousands of writers and a limited number of publishers. Each of THESE publishers have limited budgets and will only buy those manuscripts they think will best return their investment and, perhaps make a profit.

That leads to the "successful" part of you question. A well written book has a better chance of success than a poorly written one. This is even more true in non-fiction. People will need to want to buy it and recommend the book to other people. Some publishers will promote the book better than other publishers.

You can self publish a book. This costs more money out of your pocket, but, at least, you know it will be published. Locate a printer and bookbinder to discuss what this will cost. You can also do the page layouts on your own computer and print it yourself at a local copy shop. They can also help you with discussing different binding options. Of course, once you have published your book, you will have to find a way to distribute and sell it.

Many successful comic books have been started this way. Other non-fiction tracts have come this route as well.

There is an annual publication titled something like "Writer's Guide," listing book publishers, their addresses and other contact information. It also offers each publisher's guidlined for submitting manuscripts. Pick one up at a bookstore and read through the wealth of information offered. Be sure to get the latest version, since this information gets old and dated very quickly.

Self-publishing is difficult and expensive. Get an agent and they will work to get it published and promote it for you; they have the contacts in the industry you probably don't have. They can also get you a larger advance... they are well worth the 10% they take! www.agentquery.com will guide you through the steps. It take some time, but you've already put a lot of work into your book and you want to get the most for it you can! Good luck.

The best way to publish a book is to find a publisher. The better-known your publisher, the better. You may want to consider working with an agent to find the right market for your book.
if you are more of the do-it-yourselfer, get a copy ogf the newest Writer's Market. They are usually available at your closest bookstore, and some library's pick them up.

You might want to consider publishing it as an e-book. The advantage is that the costs of production of very low. However, having a hardback or even trade paperback would be more inviting for readers unless you are already an established writer.

Just something to consider.

I too am writing a book. I think without a self publisher it almost seems easier to self publish it through like a jostins or somthing.

If you are writing with a view (or a hope) of making a living from it, forget it. A tiny minority manage that; just do it because you love or leave it alone because it will exacerbate you and may make you bitter.
