suggesting not that no one cares but the singer himself is in an apathetic state regarding the cracking of corn by 'jimmy'

See at the end of that paragraph, the person singing states that the master has gone away. Cracking corn was done back in the old days to then make the flour. So while jimmy was still working, the singer didn't care, because he wasn't working and nobody was going to see him.
