We all know that Africa (along with other parts of the world) are still struggling with controlling disease. Why aren't wealthy places (the USA and Europe) helping enough? Is it because they don't want to spend their money helping other places? Or is it racism?

Thoughts?

You are right, good point. I wondered the same thing. If the money is there why don they share it? It could be a race thing.

Bob Geldof, the man behind Live Aid, has said that Pres. Bush has the most positive approach to Africa of any US president for decades.

Among other recent announcements, Pres. Bush has pledged $15 billion to fight the Aids pandemic and $10 billion to fight corruption and "open up markets" in Africa.

Ethiopia alone received about $114 million last year in U.S. foreign aid. That doesn't include financial aid from other countries.

There is quite a bit of financial aid going to Africa... which there has been for a couple decades now. Sometimes it takes more than that. Have you ever heard the quote, "You cannot help someone unless they are willing to help them self"?

In other words, Africa needs to find a way to stop the cause of their problems. Think about it, AIDS is rampant over there, yet couples with AIDS continue to have children with AIDS... it is accepted as the norm. Let me ask you, if you & your spouse both had AIDS would you have a child? Keep in mind you are both probably going to die before your child grows up. Leaving him/her an orphan since most of your relatives and friends have or will also die from AIDS. Your child will also be born with AIDS. If your child survives past infancy, they will probably be extremely unhealthy because they naturally have a lower immune system. On top of that, they will receive inadequate medical care, be malnourished, and be surrounded by poverty and filth.

As long as the people of Africa continue this cycle, their devastating lifestyle will remain the same... no matter how much money is given to them.

Should you decide that you want to help there are some fantastic organizations that you can donate to. World Vision is one I absolutely trust and have been involved with for many years.

Here's a snippet from their website:

Who is World Vision?

World Vision is a Christian relief and development organization dedicated to helping children and their communities worldwide reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty. Motivated by our faith in Jesus, we serve the poor — regardless of a person’s religion, race, ethnicity, or gender — as a demonstration of God's unconditional love for all people.

In 2005, 87 percent of World Vision’s total revenue was used to directly benefit the poor. For more information, visit the World Vision website at www.worldvision.org.

There is no point right now in putting one more cent into Africa. The real problems are a lack of civil intstitutions, lack of competent government and levels of corruption that would make Enron look like the minor leagues. Billions have been poured into Africa over the years and things only get worse. The first thing that must happen is that stable, competent governments must be established there or all esle is for nought.

I don't know, but Africa is not a poor country what so ever, parts of Africa are poor. It seems like we(USA) stick our nose in everything else, but we never take a look at the things that really need our help.Yet when it comes to fighting and bombing innocent civilians and such in other countries, for money, we are all for it. I am not the one to sugar coat anything, and our so called leaders are just hands down money hungry!

Africa was doing better before colonialism came into play. when the "superpowers" colonized Africa, the continent of Africa was pillaged from and when most of the African nations gained independence, it took bloody coups to get that independence. After independence, Africa became ravaged by disease and corrpution because of division among their people. There were some success stories. Kenya faired well compared to many African countries.

I agree with Old School that the long-held perception has been that there is no money in helping the poor. But since 2001, the global landscape has changed and failed states are now considered to be a haven for terrorist activity. In this vain, the wealthier western states have become more focused on African issues inclu. outbreaks of civil war, poverty, AIDS epidemic etc. Also, we are seeing greater spread of diseases if left untreated creating boiling points for epidemics.

The wealthiest countries are helping. With the help of Bono, they just forgave billions of dollars in debt to African nations. The real problem is that every government in Africa is corrupt. Much of the aid that is sent to Africa never get to it's intended destination because these corrupt governments take it or divert it.

well, we could throw lots of money iin the form of medicines at them to try to control the dieseases, and then some more money educating them not to have sex with monkeys or hiv-ridden whores, and not to poop in the water they drink, and then give them more money to fix up their infrastructure and then more money to buy food so they dont all starve when they dont die from diseases, but the warlords and corrupt politicians will get all the money and food anyway so why waste it on them, there are plenty of problems right here at home that need fixing first.
