OK, there are 34 of the 50 states with a town called Springfield. Those pioneers were a creative bunch, eh? Many of those same states also have nuclear reactors.

There was a Halloween episode years ago where Mr. Burns, after buying the Blood Bank, invites the Simpsons to his castle in Pennsylvania. Since New Jersey is over the border from Pennsylvania & has several Nuclear Reactors, my money's on NJ.

Seems logical. Have you ever driven thru Northern Jersey in the summer? Lots of mutants & bad smells.

There is a Springfield in: Illinois, Oregon, Ohio, Missouri, Massachusetts, Vermont, Georgia, New Jersey, Kentucky, Virginia, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Delaware (those are just the ones I found online). The Simpsons have a nuclear power plant in their town so I'm voting for either Ohio, New Jersey or possibly Missouri.

It's not set in any particular state. The show creator did that on purpose. There is a lot of states that have a town called Springfield. That way just about everyone can relate.

Springfield was chosen as the name of the town becuase its the most common place name in the United States.

They're very deliberately non-specific about state, watch a few and you'll see what i mean..

There are a lot of Springfields. Matt Groening used Springfield as a generic name, which leaves me to believe that it is a generic city.

Illinois. I think the Simpsons could live in Illinois. It is cold and there's some pollution. I don't know about a three-eyed fish or a nuclear powerplant though.

Springfield is probably the most common name for a town in the USA. That's the running joke - which one is it?
