Deja vu.
Literally it means 'before seen'. and, as you say, it's the feeling you get when you see or hear something that you think you've already experienced. The theory is that sometimes your optic nerve straightens out a little and the sight gets to the brain just that little bit before it's used to and thus registers a 'double' image in a millisecond. However your brain is so quick it recognises them both and as it registers the second one remembers the first, thus giving the false impression of 'having done it before'.

For your edification, the correct spelling of the french phrase is
deja vu ( already seen) : the illusion that one has previously experienced something actually new to one and anything which is unoriginal, said especially of the arts. I must admit, the second meaning was unfamiliar to me, so there you are, we all learn something along the way.

deja vu pronounced /deiza: vu:/is from French. It means the feeling that you've previously experienced something which is happening to you now.
Hope it is clear now.
