Look for early 1900's work by J. Stuart Blackton, Émile Cohl, and more famously, Windsor McKay (Gertie the Dinosaur).

As far as finding actual stills/cels from early animations, your more likely to find images from "Gertie the Dinosaur" than anything else. Wikipedia entry below, is a good place to start.

What kind of animation are you looking into? I only know of sources for anime (look for 'how to draw manga' and 'how to draw anime'). But if you're looking for a different style of animation, I'm sorry, but I can't help you there.
