is there such a thing as french or italian food? in both countries it's varied from region to region, isn't it? i guess southern french and southern italian food can sometimes be quite close because they have the common cultural influence of the mediterranean, but for instance breton and tuscan food are as different from each other and sauerkraut and chow mein.

They are also geographically close which means they have many of the same herbs, spices and vegetable to work with. Their foods are prepared very differently, but do use many of the same ingredients.
