The phone lines are all okay-- we can use the desktop internet fine, it's just the laptop that seems to be having problems. And we bought it new from a rent-to-own place, but I don't think there is a warranty....! :-(

Odds are the modem went bad. You have to keep in mind that you can get a power surge through a phone line as well as a power line and that phone lines rarely have surge suppressors on them. Modern design lets the modem die but saves the motherboard. Borrow (or buy) an external modem (either serial or usb), load the drivers and you should be back on-line.

1) You should try querying the modem to check that it works fine

2) you can try the option not to check for dialtone before dialing

3)check that you are using the latest modem drivers, try uninstalling and reinstalling the driver

4) if the modem is gone bad and ur laptop is not under warranty, get a pcmcia modem or a usb modem

Isn't your computer under warranty? Or did you buy from someone other than a store or manufacturer? If you bought it from one of these places they should fix it. I am sure dell would do it. You should give them a call. If they want to charge too much or something, and if no one gives you a good answer, do an Internet search or call some computer repair places and ask them if they know what could be the problem.

I would never buy a laptop for a kid who isn't going mobile anytime soon. The only reason to get a laptop is if you're not home often or travel often. I think it's ok for kids to use computers, but just share a desktop with the parentals.

Make sure your phone line is plugged into the right connection. It sounds as if you have a problem with the phone line itself. If you hook a phone to the same line you have your computer hooked to do you get a dial tone?
