Call several electrical contactors in the area. Most that do residential repairs should come out and give you a free quote.

If you are only replacing the fuse box or breaker box, the materials can range from $400 to $800 dollars depending on what is needed and what materials are used. Where the larger cost comes in is with the labor charge for a qualified (and licensed in some states) electrician doing the work properly and so that it will pass inspection. (Sorry, but there are some more costs involved here also.) Do not hire any company that says this can be done without an inspection!! The company usually handles the permits and inspection fees and it is built into what they charge you.

But electricial lines not handled properly can kill someone or destroy your home. Don't take un-needed risks.

So bottom line on price can be anywhere from $500 to $2000 dollars. But it is worth having a safer home.

If the wiring in the house is VERY old the costs could be much greater. Good Luck

This number can range from less than $100 to over $300 depending upon various conditions.

1) Why are you upgrading the box? If the box is old and has structural problems, you may be able to simply replace the box and re-use the breakers. This would be the cheapest fix.
2) If you are upgrading due to the need to add additional circuits, then the cost is going to jump somewhat as you add the breakers.
3) You may find that as you upgrade the box that you may be required to make additional changes due to new building and/or electrical codes. This could easily cost more than $300.

If you are considering doing this yourself, you should be very aware that incorrect installation could easily cause fire, injury and even death. Also, if you do it yourself, obviously you can ignore the building/electrical codes, however, that could not only be dangerous but you will never be able to sell the home with out a home inspection which will discover the out-of-code installation and you'll have do it all over again.

My suggestion, get an electrician out to give you quote on the work. Most will do come out for an estimate for little or no cost and this could save you $$$$.

Good luck,

You have a ton of variables there that you did not mention. From what service to what. How big of a service, new wiring, county codes, state codes, electrician or do it yourself? These are just a few of the questions. I would call a couple of electricians in your area for quotes on this. It could take months of questions on here and you still may be no closer to your answer.

If you need more circuits, you may need more voltage from the pole to your house.

If you install more outlets, you may also need complete re-wiring in the house.

Upwards from about $3-4,000.00, You need an electrician, not 7th-12th graders here.

I'm way old, but I don't know.
Everything has to follow CODE.

The other post said $40.00. Maybe they know more than I do.
It has happened.
