Having two sticks of matched memory is always better, modern memory and motherboards are almost always dual channel. Think of it has having a dual core processor, two is better than one, even if it amounts to the same size. So, having 2x 512MB modules is better than having a single 1GB module. Now, if you plan to add a 1GB module as soon as you get it (for a total of 2GB) then by all means get the single 1GB. Remember, it's always best to have matched pairs of memory meaning, same size, same speed though you can have different sizes installed, it does not equal optimum performance.

That all depends on one thing . . . are you going to add more memory later? If you only ever plan to have the 1 gig, get the 2 512 sticks. It will be cheaper, AND if one decides to stop working, you aren't totally screwed. But, if you plan to add more memory later, and upgrade to 2 gig, go ahead and buy the 1 gig stick for now. Save you from having to buy two 1 gig sticks later and leaving behind 2 perfectly good 512's.

1 gig. Because you'll probably have an extra memory slot with the gig but both will be taken up probably by 2 512's.

Technically it is the same. 1 Gig is also 1024....even a bit more if I'm not mistaken.

It would come down to your motherboard.

I'm guessing your asking about the sticks. Since most laptops only have 2 slots available for RAM, I would go with the 1GB. That will allow you to upgrade later without having to replace your current sticks. If that's not what you mean....then here's an FYI...2x512=1GB

for my opinion, you wont be doing hardcore jobs on your laptop because laptops are designed for its portability, its not really used as a desktop for office jobs etc. so having 2 pieces of 512mb is better for me because, if one memory is not working properly, you still have the other, and besides you wont be needing extra memory slots coz so a total of 1gig memory is more than enough.

If you get two 512 - you'll end up with 1024

It depends on your motherboard. If it's dual-channel, then 2 memory sticks is faster. If it's not, than a single stick is faster.
