cost = free all the time
selection is more varied since you can browse through literally thousands of songs or albums. since most albums only have a few good songs on them anyways, it's better just to download the good ones without having to pay 15-20 for the whole album of which you'll only be listening to three or four songs anyways.
You have the ability to listen to the tracks before you can download them. whether through limewire or itunes, you don't have to wait for your friend to get a copy for you to listen to, or you don't have to sit around waiting for reviews to come out about the songs etc. you can just download and listen without any wasted time. even if you have no idea of what you want but want some new songs to fill your ipod or whatever, you can just select ones at random and get a chance to listen to them and see if they're any good. if you wind up liking the song or songs from a new artist you might be more inclined to actually buy the album to hear what they really sound like.

It seems to me like a case of people not respecting other people's property.

What may be perceived as "free" is not really without cost. It's like shoplifting. Sure, you can walk out with a tomato, but they're gonna raise prices on the bread to cover it. Nobody produces or plays music for free. Nobody. If not for actual money, then for the respect, or other rewards that come from it. If you're not suporting artists, then you're hurting them.

With $$ tens of millions $$ being spent to promote artists, it's no wonder that some see stealing "a bit of music" as harmless. However, if you have a CD collection and somebody stole it from you, you'd be just as pissed.

It's a matter of respect. I buy my music, and I sell my own works too. I have respect for artists.

If you're specifically talking about buying physical CD's vs. buying downloads of CD's (Like http://www.rickshawrecords.com/downloads.html) then it's all about convenience for me. Downloads are easy and fast.

The convenience. Why park 35 parking spaces a way and walk into a crowded mall to search for your favorite band when you can download them in less than 5 minutes?

Other reasons: selection, ease of operation, etc.

Ambiguous question. Downloading doesn't necessarily mean not buying. The future way (Ex: Online music stores) is downloading, while paying for it, in effect buying them.

But if you meant downloading and not paying, the reasons are already listed(i.e.: No cost, ease, choice, etc)

i buy the music from itunes, so it isn't free for me.

But, i like it better because

-it doesn't take up storage space in my house.
I have OLD albums, 45s, cassette tapes, a few 8 tracks, CDs. They all take up space.

- the electronic copies of music are almost indestrcutible. It's on my computer, or my external hard drive, or my ipod.
It doesn't warp, bend, scratch, stretch or break.

-i also like that i have a much larger selection, that covers MANY years of recorded music.
