Ok this is a common misperception. Soccer is commonly played in the US at the youth level.
example: "US Youth Soccer registers over 3,000,000 youth players between the ages of five and nineteen. "
and that is only the ones registered with that group which I am sure does not count the recerational teams. For ever select team there are 4-30 rec teams depending on the age. Also consider that my generation which now has kids old enough play was at the start of the soccer growth in this country there are quick a few adult soccer players in this country as well. So if you add all that up there must be somewhere in the nieborhood of 25-30 Million soccer players in the US or more that half the total population of England.
In fact in shear number of players soccer is growing greatly and I am sure there are more actual players of Soccer than American Football.
As more people from the orginal generation of soccer players that were born in the 60- and 70s continue to have kids it can only continue to grow.

When the Philadelphia Atoms won the North American Soccer League title in 1973, I began playing the game. At the time, my high school had a soccer program and I signed up. Unfortunately, it was cancelled two years later. I found ice hockey and baseball more appealling and loved football too. Soccer just isn't popular here and I wish it were. I have supported the Philadelphia Fury, abhor the indoor abomination, and support the MLS. I love the World Cup tournament and attended an exhibition between AC Milan and Chelsea at Lincoln Financial Field here in Philly in August 2005. I think in time it will be popular. I'm 46 and hope to see MLS grow into a power comparable to other Premier leagues worldwide. I feel that many powerful American corporations are hesitant to back the game. Imagine the potential if they did.

A country's sport is based upon its culture. Soccer does not suit the US. Americans to me appear to want high scoring fast games. Remember the world cup semi Germant v Italy, a wonderful game 0-0 until the end well the Americans would have switched off after 10 minutes.

My thought is that Soccer does not need alot of resources, so in the USA, you can find a basketball court or baseball diamond anywhere and generally Americans have more resources to buy thier kids bats, gloves, etc. But ironically- Soccer in the USA is an eliteist sport. Parents spend tons of $$ to send their kids to camps and leagues and you will generally only find Soccer programs in wealthier areas.

Wrong question. You should wonder why baseball or basketball aren't played very much in other countries. See? It's just a matter of perception. Everybody can't march to the same drummer.
