I've already stated how dreams work in another question, but the dreams themselves aren't your brain punishing you (that's not how it works), it's simply your memories flashing by the occipital lobe, that's why you most often dream about things you've done, are going to do, or are doing "at the moment" because you've thought about them. If you're dieting, you may be stressed out and worrying, so it's not the diet that's causing the nightmares, rather how you feel about the diet (I know it sounds freudian, but I'm not a fan of him so don't bother pointing out freud's nonsense).

Certain foods affect the way we sleep along with the way we dream. When ever I have really bad dreams, my parents always asked what I ate the night before, or if I ate anything that may have been bad. The website I listed provides some information, but just know that even changes in your diet will do that...its normal.
