Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo, Broken Social Scene, The Wrens, Stars, Animal Collective, and Built to Spill are at or near the top of the indie world as far as I'm concerned, and all of them are still making music. Defunct indie bands that are great include Pavement and Archers of Loaf.
