No, because I believe in the Bible.

Yes and no. In a way it would have been nice if my husband would have taken my name instead of me his, but that's because my last name was only three letters and his is ten letters!!

But no, I would not want to start a new tradition. I do believe you can do that now a days, but I am glad to have his name though. I mean, he is the man of the house, and you are supposed to leave your family and cleave or stay with him, so it is the way to go, the girl taking the guys name.

I see the issue as more of a practical one (although its usefulness in U.S. culture might be minimal) -- how do you track the family line if you're not sure the name belongs to the man or the woman?

(It would be able to be either, in your scenario, and thus confusing.)

So sticking with either the woman's or man's surname as the standard (I don't care which), or a hypenated form of the two, would seem to be most logical.

Like I said, this is not as relevant as it used to be in older societies where it was extremely important to be able to track one's lineage.

I'm curious, though: What percentage of women enjoy taking the man's last name, versus how many men would enjoy giving up their surname for the woman's?

[I'm betting there's a pride issue involved on some level in men...]

It would be great! Why does the girl always have to have the guy's last name? Even in my culture, we are all refered to as tim's wife or bob's wife. When they call us, they do say tim's wife. They never ever call us by our real names! THey don't even know our real names! Even if we are married for 10 yrs, they still won't know our names. I think its because women are looked as the inferior sex, things were always this way!

Why would I want to keep my last name? It still came from my father...it still is a label given to me by a man.

I took my husband's last name because I love him and I am honored to be a part of his family.

It is up to the couple, not me. When my daughter got married she and her husband both hyphenated their names, as way of showing it to be a partnership between equals, not a transfer of property from me to him.

noits tradition for the wife to take her husbands name, its symbolic.....like she is part of the man now and he will take care of her and they can start a family in his name..why change it? i think its romantic
