I had my cold air intake for about 6 months now and I think it needs a cleaning. So I need to know what to do to actually clean my air filter.

Unless you drive in a particularly dusty area, you should not have to clean your filter (assuming permanent like a K&N) but about once every year. You can remove the filter and see what it looks like, and shake off any loose material.
If you have to clean it, don't just clean it with a garden hose, it's not good enough. K&N sells a kit you can get at most auto parts stores with a cleaning spray you apply and let soak, then wash off through the inside of the filter with a hose and let dry. The kit also has the oil spray needed to apply to the filter after it is dry. You might not be able to drive your car for a while when your doing this, unless you have a spare filter (paper is cheaper for spare)

Wait, your cold air intake and your air filter are two different things. You should never have to clean your cold air intake. If you have a permanent air filter, like K&N, then you need to just take it out and clean it with a garden hose. Get any dirt and collected junk out of there. Then dry it off. It's pretty simple.

Take it off and clean it with a degreaser.
If you have a standard filter, replace it.
If you have a "K&N" type filter you have to buy a special cleaner for it and a special oil to reoil it. If you have a regular filter I would suggest replacing it with a K&N type filter. Fram also has a cloth type filter
