It's because smelly bacteria can survive. If you want washcloths to smell fresh longer, you have to wash them at high temperatures (e.g., over 70 degrees Celsius) to kill the resident microbes. And By all means don't keep using the same washcloth over and over.. That's a bed for bacteria!

Well, habitual reuse with out laundering IS gross. What causes it is the breeding of bacteria in the wash cloth fibers. Get that thing in the laundry!!! Use HOT water!!! And LOADS of soap!!!!

make it a point to dry the wash cloth properly and throw it out after 4 weeks.
