It's because smelly bacteria can survive. If you want washcloths to smell fresh longer, you have to wash them at high temperatures (e.g., over 70 degrees Celsius) to kill the resident microbes. And By all means don't keep using the same washcloth over and over.. That's a bed for bacteria!

Bacteria can cause odor, so can mold.
Always use a fresh, clean washcloth each time you wash! Simple.

Well, habitual reuse with out laundering IS gross. What causes it is the breeding of bacteria in the wash cloth fibers. Get that thing in the laundry!!! Use HOT water!!! And LOADS of soap!!!!

The bacteria that you wiped off of your skin is probably what is causing the odor.

make it a point to dry the wash cloth properly and throw it out after 4 weeks.
