Got an argument with my brother on this one. I heard it's because someone said the band would "go over like a lead balloon"... and he says it was "go over like a lead zepplin." So which was it?

Led Zeppelin was briefly & initially listed as "The New Yardbirds" untill the release of thier 1st album, when the band wanted to signal that they were heading into a different direction than the original Yardbirds.

Upon hearing about the original lineup for "The New Yardbirds", former Who drummer, Kieth Moon had made an off-handed remark saying quote: "With a lineup like that, your career is gonna crash faster than a lead zeppelin!" early in thier career.

Remembering this comment, the band's original manager at the time suggested the remark to the band as an idea for a new name.

The spelling of the word "Lead" was changed to "Led" to avoid mispronunciation as the word "Lead", as in "Lead singer".

The name stuck as the band finished thier final tour as "The New Yardbirds" & recorded thier 1st album, "Led Zeppelin I", which was rumoured to have been recorded in less than 30 hours.

"That ought to go over like a lead Zepplin." The statement was made by the drummer prior to an appearance on a local television, or radio, station.

Update: "The band completed the Scandinavian tour as the New Yardbirds and then set about coming up with a new name. The name Lead Zeppelin had been suggested by Keith Moon when Page was considering forming a supergroup with the drummer. Keith Moon himself got the phrase from John Entwistle's term for a bad gig, describing it as "going over" (some sources say "going down") "like a lead zeppelin".[8] The group adopted the name, deliberately dropping the 'a' in Lead to prevent people from pronouncing it as "leed". I'm sorry your brother is right. Originally called, The Yardbirds, their name was changed after one of the guys from the Who said the band would go over like a lead zeppelin.

People are confused because essentially a zeppelin is a balloon. If it was "go over like a lead balloon" they would have been called Led Balloon.

Well, the story as it goes in the autobiographies, (possibly the most reliable source), is that the name came from the fact that jimmy actually proposed to keith moon to be the drummer of led zeppelin (of course not called that at the time.) However, Moon was happy in the who and told jimmy that he thought the idea would go over "like a lead balloon". Wel, jimmy loved it and after changing the spelling to led (to avoid mis-prounounciation) they changed from the new yardbirds to led zeppelin.

I heard the story of the lead zepplin. A zepplin is kinda like a blimp that carried passengers.
