...and force others to breathe the smoke and poison our lungs?

Answer: Apparently a lot as they always do this and I F*ING hate it.

It makes me feel better to tell my son to hold his breathe in front of them and then say how rude they are. They never have anything to sa back.

Rude? I guess it's not rude to blow poisonous gas in the faces of others... How would you like it if a group of smelly people always hung around farting right outside the door to Wal-Mart...would you say something?

To paraphrase a Weaver's song,
Oh it's sad, ain't it sad, yes it's sad, great god....
Yeah, they really do look pathetic, and I'm sure when the weather gets worse, they feel pathetic too. Just heard about a new product designed for all those nicotine fiends who have to sit on planes for long periods of time, without their cancer sticks. It's a liquid, like a lemonade, that contains nicotine and apparantly fills all the body's nicotine needs. Sounds yucky! They are just starting to sell it at airports.
Why don't they just quit! It would make life so much easier (and healthier) for them!!!

Honestly, I seriously doubt that the *minute* amount of cigarette smoke your son inhales while walking into a public building will cause him to get cancer.

If you're so concerned about it, contact whoever owns the building/restaurant/mall...wherever it is that this occurs...and tell them to move the ashtrays farther from the entrances.

If I were you, I'd be more concerned with the factories, tractor and trailers, dumptrucks, automobiles with emission problems, etc. that spew out black, noxious fumes every day. How often to you take your son to a place where you walk through an actual cloud of smoke? (And I don't mean one or two people standing there, out of the way smoking...I mean a HUGE crowd?) Probably not often... How often does your son breathe the tainted air outside? Many time a day, I would suspect.

Ah yes, I remember back to the days when I lashed out at anyone who I perceived had disrespected me in any way. However, I came to realize that there are more of them than I can handle. I can't teach everyone a lesson every hour of every day.

So, I attempt to ignore most indirect transgressions if possible unless there is some immediate danger that I can't let go.

Otherwise, if I believe that it's a big enough sin, I address the individual transgressor directly and to the point. I don't indirectly insult him.

For example, in the case you mentioned, I would walk directly over to one of the persons smoking in the front door and politely but firmly say that I would appreciate it if he would move to a more neutral area to smoke.

I think people respect you if you look them directly in the eye and express a firm opinion without raising your voice or attempting to publicly embarrass them.

Try that the next time.

Where we live in an apartment complex you have 3 neighbors plus yourself. We are in the middle and it would be very nice when in the evening to open our windows in the front room area; sometimes we get too, most times we cannot; the three families in our complex smoke and usually outside so if our windows are open their nasty cancerous smoke pours in our windows and our family has to shut our windows and feel couped up all because of disrespect for our non smoking ways. It's a vile habit.

Look I dunno where your from but let me give u an idea of where I am. I live in Scotland and smoking has been banned in all public places, the first place in the UK to implement this. So now people have to go outside to smoke.

You can't have it all ways can u?

When u get in then it will be lovely and smoke free!

Now quit your whinging!

the smoke won't hurt you in such trace amounts. In fact, there is no evidence to show that smoking one or two cigarettes a day has any negative health effects.

stop teaching your kid to be rude; that's stupid no matter what. don't be an idiot

I applaud you. Both for the smoking thing and for answering your own question.
