I have 3 red eared sliders of my own and heheh no offense to my turtles but they ACT dumb as s***. But that's what's so endearing about turtles I suppose. If I remember correctly from Psychology class, reptiles lack the limbic system we have that deals with emotion, motivation and emotional association with memory. So, I think that's what it is about their memory. To me, they're no brain, but all animal instinct. Turtles are prey to a lot of other animals out there so I think that that may be why they can be skittish at times. But to answer your question straight forward, I wouldn't be able to give you an exact time; I would guess not very long.

It seems that some sea turtles have pretty good memories swimming thousands of miles to reach a beach from which they were born to lay eggs themselves. But is that memory or instinct? I can tell you from experience that my Sulcatta tortoise recognizes my face when he sees me. Doesnt react to anyone else except me. A lot of other sulcatta owners say the same thing, they seem to take notice of their owners

it's an ongoing joke in my house about the short memory span of our red eared sliders (about 3 seconds we estimate, lol). I don't know for certain, but they do associate people with food, but that may be more instinctive at this point than actual memory.

They only remember things important to turtles so its hard to say. Many go back to the same place at night after roaming all day. Mine remembered foods places ( he wasn't supposed to go) and possibly people.

We have a turtle that freaks every time I walk past it's tank...either it remembers that I'm the one that rescued it out from underneath a semis wheels or I'm the one that feeds it and cleans its tank....
