just match up what the Bios will recognize and the pin amounts. For example, if you have a 2600+ AMD Socket 754 processor, you should be able to replace it with any Socket AMD socket 754 processor. Run the numbers on your processor/motherboard and try to find out what it is. In your case, which socket . . .
The Down side to ANY name brand computer is they often will not update the BIOS for the motherboard to accept, say a Athlon 64 Socket 754. Since you have an AMD, you are running either a socket 754, or a socket 939. I doubt you have the just released AM2 socket. Either way I do not see any sence in upgrading from a 3200+ to a 3800+. there is really not to much of a difference . . . the dual core, you will have to try out. Again - depends on if the BIOS will recognize the Dual core. Worst case senerio, it does not work - check the VOLTAGES. Middle case, only 1 of the CPU's works, best case, it works great. FX - same case as dual core, BIOS dependant. You most likely can download the manual - however name brand computers = shotty manual for upgrading,
Best bet, try it out, BUT make sure the pins are lined up correctly, since you can blow the chip & motherboard & memory, etc. It is really a very simple process, and there are hundreds of web sites out there that show you how the process is done - with pictures.
Oh and do not forget the thermal paste!!!

Well, I can tell you that it's a Socket 939 processor. Whether or not it supports a dual core processor is up to the motherboard and that I cannot tell you. I can't tell you if it will support a FX processor (most likely but not guaranteed), I can tell you with 100% certainty that it will support a Socket 939 Athlon 64 3800+ (note NOT the Athlon 64x2 3800+), it's just safer if you stick with single core processors, I cannot guarantee compatibility with a dual core processor because you did not provide enough details.

first i got a bit confused by this question...i mean processor and cpu is one and the same for us out here in india...but i'll try to analyse ur question in different way.
I guess u better check out on the site of ur vendor which motherboard has been given with the PC. Or u can open up ur cabinet and check for the model name urself!!Then go on the respective website of the motherbd where u'll find whether the motherbd is compatible with fx or not.

Product support on this model is available at:

Judging by the instructions availible for replacing the system(Mother)board, and the fact that most mainboards are auto-configuring as far as processor and memory are conserned, I would assume that processor replacement is possible.
I don't see any reason that any other AMD processor with the same socket requirements. Hopefully you have a socket 939 mainboard.

Find out what motherboard you have. Figure out what CPUs are compatiable with that motherboard. You may have to replace the motherboard, or simply replace the CPU. Regardless, it is possible to upgrade, but in some rare cases it requires getting a new computer case to accommodate the new motherboard.
