IN MOST PLACES ALLIGATORS AND CROCADILES ARE ILLEGAL AND OR PROTECTED. NOW... AS FAR AS I KNOW THERE ARE MINATURE BREEDS THAT ARE IN SOME PLACES LEGAL TO KEEP...
PLEASE KEEP IN MIND THAT WHATEVER YOU GET YOU NEED TO MAKE SURE IT IS LEGAL TO HAVE AND THAT YOU HAVE PROPER CARE FOR IT. I HAVE WORKED WITH GATORS BEFORE AND THEY ARE NOT EASY... EVEN A SMALL 4 FOOT SPECTACLED CAIMEN CAN GIVE YOU A RUN FOR YOUR MONEY... THESE ANIMALS ARE NOT MEANT FOR CAPTIVITY. IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN HELPING WILDLIFE WHY NOT JOIN A ASSOCIATION WHERE YOU CAN GET TRAINING AND HANDLE THESE ANIMALS LEGALLY AND LEARN HOW TO KEEP THEM PROPERLY UNTIL THEY SHOULD BE RELEASED?

ok picture this scenario.......you buy this cute little hatchling alligator at your local pets o rama store and bring it home. It lives quite well for a couple months in this small tank you have given it with a lil slide for it's tiny lil body, then it begins to grow. You have to continue to upgrade his tank because well the little tyke just won't stop growing and you don't want to come home to a broken glass where said gator has busted threw. you continue to upgrade his lil tank until you can't afford it anymore and just put him in your bathtub for awhile. I mean come on you can always shower at the parents house right? Eventually you will either get tired of either A. Stinking to high heaven or B. seeing mom and dad shake their heads daily because their child is at their house taking showers and pretty much living there again and letting his gator run his house. Upon tiring of this task, you'll say well he's a wild animal I'll just turn him loose when it's warm I'm sure he'll migrate, yeah right. You turn this big gator loose which you swore was soooooooooooooo cute when you got it and a week later on the news you see a kid standing on the side of the river bank where you released your beloved pet and he's holding either a brained gator, a shot gator or a gator with his mouth taped shut and you think OMG that's my baby crooked jaw!!! or whatever you lovingly named the poor creature.
OR.........................
You bring baby gator home go threw same BS of cage upgrades and such and then build an enclosure for the lil guy in your yard. He gets loose one day and eats the neighbors dog for lunch and wanders back to his secure pond. Then the neighbors are hunting you down and wanting to kill your animal because you haven't the slightest idea how to properly care for him or her.
Learn, read, learn some more, read alot more, go to school if you must, but DO NOT buy a gator without first thinking it threw as carefully as you can and thinking about the lifetime commitment you will be making to an animal that will likely out live you.
imagine that scenario too, what happens if you get sick, die, go on vaction, etc etc, who's going to care for very dangerous reptile while you are gone or after you die? Who will you leave him to to care for him? will they really want to take on the responsibility of a full grown alligator?
Also remember this, it is illegal to release a captive gator into the wild. You have to be a wild life rehabilitator to do that, if you are caught it's a felony, not just a misdemeaner, a felony, that's a federal prison, a black mark on your record and well it's a ***** getting a job with a felony on your record, ask any convicted felon how easy they find work in a decent company.

They are legal in Ohio. You have to have at least an acre of land (in other words, can't own one in an apt. complex). If you decide to get one, make sure you get an American Alligator, which is the most docile of breeds. Also, get a baby, you don't know how an adult has been treated and their temperment. Be sure to handle it regularly so it stays used to being handled. If you want a gator, get one, they're awesome. With all that being said, remember one thing, deep down it's still a wild animal and could bite your arm off any time.

Alligators don't make good pets.
Also it is illegal in many states to possess an alligator without a license.
They do taste good however and make excellent belts & shoes!

You don't. You are just trying to attract attention by having an exotic pet that you cannot possibly keep in a proper manner.

Used to be you could get them in Florida, but I don't think you can anymore. I believe they are protected. Maybe you could get one from some Floridian who caught one in their swimming pool. (just kidding)
